STARTALK & SOUTH ASIA CENTER
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
Saturday, November 7, 2009
. Time: 8:30AM – 4PM
The South Asia Center, a Title VI Center at the University of Pennsylvania hosted a two-week Penn STARTALK Teacher Training Institute for Hindi & Urdu in July 2009 - July 13-24. It was a residential program where 21 pre-service and in-service teachers from schools (heritage and public) and universities across the nation gained knowledge and experience about imparting standards-based instruction and assessment in Hindi & Urdu. Teachers were made aware of the important connection between curriculum, instruction and assessment through thebackward design principle. They learned about alternative modes of performance-based assessment and practiced conducting and rating OPIs in Hindi& Urdu. As an evidence of their learning, participants created mini standards-based lessons in Hindi or Urdu and presented them to their cohort in class using best instructional practices. As a part of continuing professional development of the participants, South Asia Center brought the participants back to Penn campus for a one-day workshop on November 7, 2009. At the workshop, participants shared their post-program experiences and new lesson plans, and advanced their pedagogy training by learning about new Web 2 technologies for language learning.
