UPenn 2014 Hindi-Urdu Startalk Program

The University of Pennsylvania is now accepting applications for its 2014 Hindi-Urdu Startalk Program!

Spoken Hindi and Urdu are nearly identical and are used as native or link languages throughout northern India and Pakistan. Hindi-Urdu, the common spoken variety, is among the five most widely spoken languages in the world. In addition to being a door to vibrant South Asian cultures including those of Bollywood film and music, and the rich world of Hindi and Urdu literature, Hindi and Urdu are essential for working in South Asia and can enhance careers such as those in the State Department and international relations, aid, and business.

Students in the UPenn 2014 Hindi-Urdu Startalk Program will learn to communicate using the common spoken language in a variety of real-world situations. They will also learn to read and write in one of the scripts. Students will acquire language proficiency and deepen their understanding of culture through a fun and engaging curriculum that maximizes hands-on practice. Students will virtually visit South Asia and experience the diverse regional cultures and histories.

The UPenn 2014 Hindi-Urdu Startalk Program will take place from July 7 to July 25.  Classes will be held Monday-Friday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Students at all levels, including absolute beginners, are welcome to apply. The program targets college undergraduates as well as local high school students. Students will have access to Penn facilities and the program will be a wonderful way for high school students to get a taste of college life. The program will be free of charge and will include daily authentic meals as well as a local field trip and talks on South Asia by Penn faculty members. The program will also offer a limited number of scholarships to cover tuition, fees, and housing for students interested in taking the course for college credit.
