The South Asia Center invites language instructors at Penn to participate in a daylong workshop led by Dr. Laura L. Franklin, Professor of French and Portuguese, Northern Virginia Community College and Editor, MERLOT World Languages. Dr. Franklin also serves as and Program Director of NOVASTARTALK.
TITLE: Tools to Engage All Language Learners: Open Educational Resources and Authentic Materials for Language Learning
DESCRIPTION: This interactive workshop will begin with a rationale for the use of open educational resources (OER) in the World Language classroom as a way to provide student access to authentic and engaging learning materials. OER are particularly valuable to instructors teaching less-commonly taught languages where teaching materials are either cost-prohibitive or hard to find. An effective search for materials will be one focus of the hands-on activities at this workshop.
The presenter will also particularly highlight open educational resources that have been judged by content experts to be of excellent quality of content and ease of use. The selected materials will be appropriate for students of various proficiency levels. Participants will go home with access to free and open learning materials to use in their own classes. MERLOT Voices, an online community for MERLOT users will also be introduced as well as other language-relevant social media. Attendees will learn in a hands-on setting how to make the most efficient use of the featured resources.
The presenter is a founding Editor of the MERLOT World Languages collection of learning materials in commonly and less-commonly languages. She is the 2016 recipient of the Nelson H. Brooks Award or Outstanding Leadership in the Profession presented by the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. With many years of experience as a language educator in French and Portuguese, she is an expert in finding high quality materials for the 21st century world language classroom. Franklin is also the Program Director for NOVASTARTALK, a summer program for teachers of less commonly-taught languages. (LCTLS) Those summer workshops are focused on using educational technology to support the teaching and learning of LCTLS.
