Get PAID to Study South Asian Languages! DEADLINE MARCH 1

ATTENTION PENN UNDERGRADUATES* STUDYING A SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGE!

DO YOU WANT TO...

  • Get paid to build your South Asian language skills?

  • Add a prestigious fellowship to your resume at the same time?

Did you know you the South Asia Center offers FLAS Fellowships of $15,000 for the Academic Year study of any modern South Asian language?

That’s right.  You can use the fellowship for language study right here at Penn, OR at a qualified study abroad program**.

Too busy during the academic year to pursue your love of languages?  We also offer FLAS Fellowships of up to $7,500 for summer language study.

You can use the fellowship at any qualified domestic or overseas program.  Many students choose the South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI), in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin; or the American Institute for Indian Studies (AIIS) summer language program, which features programs throughout India.   However, many other programs also qualify.

Want to learn more?  Visit the FLAS website, where you’ll find FAQs, the online application and instructions, and a list of eligible languages.  Still have questions?  Contact FLAS Coordinator Jody Chavez atjchavez@sas.upenn.edu, Tel. 215-898-8816, or just stop by Williams Hall, Room 818 (within the main South Asia Studies suite) during business hours.

Ready to Apply?  It’s easy.  You’ll need the following:

  1. personal statement regarding your planned use of the FLAS fellowship. This is a one-page, single-spaced, essay describing why this language study is essential to realizing your study and career goals.

  2. Your CV or resume

  3. An unofficial Penn transcript in digital format.  Transcripts may be verified during the review process.

  4. Two letters of recommendation (you will request them through the system). When you ask the faculty members for a recommendation, tell them that all letters of recommendation must specifically address how a FLAS would contribute to your current program of study or would be integrated with it.
