The University of Pennsylvania's STARTALK Intensive Urdu Summer Language Program is part of a national effort to enhance Americans’ learning of less commonly taught languages in schools. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and is mutually intelligible with standard Hindi spoken in India. The combined population of Hindi and Urdu speakers is the fourth largest in the world. Urdu shares its script with Arabic, Persian, Dari, and Pashtu and is one of the most critical languages for understanding the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.
