 Obtaining print materials (primarily books)
To locate items of interest, first search library catalog, Franklin. This is a standard library online catalogue and searching it should be straightforward. For those items in our collection which circulate (the catalog record will make this clear), you can make note of the work and submit it to your local library’s interlibrary loan office and they will be able to process the request. Should you encounter any problems, feel free to contact our South Asia bibliographer, David Nelson, nelsond@pobox.upenn.edu (215-898-7460).

Obtaining Films/Documentaries

Our films (both feature and documentary) are fully catalogued and are all available through our interlibrary loan system. If there is a film or films in our video catalogue that interests you, please request those through your respective library's interlibrary loan office. For those of you not affiliated with an institution of higher learning, you could make use of your local public library to place the loan request.

For the past six years the South Asia Center has been organizing Asia Day in February on Penn campus. This event, co-sponsored with the Center for East Asian Studies, enables more than a hundred high school students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware to attend an intensive day long program of classes on varied topics related to South and East Asia, as well as enjoy Indian and Chinese cuisine! Faculty and graduate students of Penn offer their expertise in subjects ranging from arts to politics. Asia Day continues to be one of the most exciting of South Asia Center’s outreach programs for K-12 students. If you would like your students to attend this event, please contact us.

Hello India

On Saturday, March 29th, 2008, the South Asia Center and the University of Pennsylvania Museum's International Classroom are planning to host a day long event on Saturday for K-12 students and community members. Please check our calendar of Events for details about the program.
Special programs for students can be scheduled in conjunction with your specific needs. These might include a tour of the University Museum, workshops on South Asia related issues, attending a class on South Asia, and other programs to assist you in teaching about South Asia.
The South Asia Center throughout the year brings to Penn campus internationally renowned scholars and performers who share their expertise and talent at events which are open to all. Almost all of these are free, though prior registration may be required for some of these. We would love to have your students attend these events which can be found listed on our website on the Events page.
We will be happy to facilitate your students’ access to the South Asia resources available at the Penn library to do their research. Please contact South Asia bibliographer Dr. David Nelson at nelsond@pobox.upenn.edu or 215-898-7460 if you would wish to avail this facility.

The South Asia Center works closely with Penn’s Department of South Asia Studies which offers instruction in eight to ten (depending on enrollment) South Asian languages. Linguistic assistance can be provided by our language experts to meet the needs of you and your school district. These can range from offering assistance with the teaching of a South Asian language to your students, to informing teachers and staff of the socio-linguistic and socio-cultural facets of students speaking these South Asian languages. In the past we have offered professional development sessions to ESL teachers acquainting them of the cultural and linguistic background of their South Asian first generation students.

July 2007: Hindi Language courses will be offered at Delaware County, PA. Please email haimanti@sas.upenn.edu if you, your students or community members are interested in this language and culture course.

These will be posted with proper credit to the contributor. Following are suggested ways in which you and your students can enrich our resources:
 • Lessons on South Asia designed by you. These will be uploaded on our website with proper credit
being accorded to you as the lesson planner.
 • Internet or other resources on South Asia which you would like to share with other teachers.
 • Articles related to your class-projects, South Asia travel experiences, students’ views and write-
ups on South Asia, commentaries on South Asian events attended at Penn and elsewhere.

If you are interested in submitting your contribution to the South Asia Center, please email haimanti@sas.upenn.edu.
