Location: Williams Hall, University of Pennsylvania

Time and date: 9–4:30, Nov. 12, Saturday

Description:

After a hiatus of several years, the Penn Hindi-Urdu workshop returns to Philadelphia! The Workshop will be organized by Gregory Goulding (Assistant Professor, Department of South Asia Studies) and is supported by the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Anyone who is interested in reading Hindi and Urdu is encouraged to attend.

The Penn Hindi-Urdu workshop is modeled on the annual Spring Hindi–Urdu workshop at Columbia University. Sessions will consist of collaborative reading of selected and pre-circulated readings. There will be four sessions in the morning and afternoon, alternating between Hindi and Urdu.

This year's theme will be "Modern Interpretations of Literary Traditions." As we restart the workshop, the theme is intended to draw together a wide range of research interests in Hindi and Urdu, and consider the ways in which modern writers imagine and reshape the literatures of the past. We will be reading from poetry and prose, political satire and fantastic popular literature, and touching upon the connections across the many languages which form the literary cultures of northern India and Pakistan today.

Texts for the workshop will be distributed ahead of time, and will be made available in both the Devanagari and Perso-Arabic scripts. Materials will be made available beforehand, but preparation of the materials is not required to attend.

The event is open to all, but please RSVP at: https://pennhindiurdu2022.wordpress.com/. Available on that web site will also be more information about the event, and the readings when available.

If you have any questions, please e-mail Gregory Goulding at ggouldin@sas.upenn.edu.

Again, all levels of facility with these languages are welcome, and we hope you will be able to attend!
