UPIAPSI

Commemorating 75 years of the India-Pakistan partition and 50 years of Bangladesh’s Liberation, this webinar presents a discussion on ‘Partition through Popular Media’.

The discussants will present from their contributions made to the special issue on Partition in the peer-reviewed academic journal India Review (Volume 21, Number 3). This special issue has been guest edited by Amit Ranjan and Farooq Sulehria. All the articles in this volume interrogate the continued portrayal of ‘otherness’ or communal differences, which were at the root of the partition, in the various forms of mass media, films and textbooks across India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. These analyses are of immediate importance in the current environment in the subcontinent. Partition, therefore, is viewed not just as a historical episode, but a living memory that is continuously being portrayed in a variety of ways that shape how later generations understand it.

The session will be moderated by: E. Sridharan, Academic Director, University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India & Editor in Chief, India Review Journal and,
Anthony Cerulli, Directo, Center for South Asia , University of Wisconsin-Madison & Editor, India Review Journal.
