Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program - Non- U.S Citizens

We are excited to share an opportunity from our friends at Berkeley to study Urdu in Pakistan if you are a Non-U.S Citizen:

The Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP-AIPS) is accepting applications from non-U.S. Citizens for its Fall 2019 intensive Urdu language immersion program based at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan until March 1, 2019. Jointly administered by the American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) and the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP) at the University of California, Berkeley, this Urdu language program offers daily classroom instruction, five days a week, for approximately fifteen weeks. Classes are small and individual tutorials provided. There are regular assignments outside of class and special emphasis is placed on connecting with the local speech community as well as self-management of learning. Participants need to take part in all program events, such as attending films, plays and other cultural activities.

 

Program Eligibility:

  • To be eligible for the program all applicants must meet ONE of the outlined criteria: 1) Have completed a Bachelor's program from an accredited university 2) Be enrolled in an accredited graduate level university program; or, 3) Be a scholar/faculty-person affiliated with an institution of higher learning

  • Applicants must demonstrate basic level expertise in Urdu before starting the program.

  • Ability to participate in the BULPIP-AIPS Program is contingent upon an applicant’s ability to receive a visa for

    Pakistan.

  • Applicants must be in good mental and physical health.

  • Short listed candidates will be required to participate in a Skype interview with the selection committee.

  • All qualified students, regardless of race, sex, color, creed, age, handicap, or sexual orientation are welcome.

  5. Application Fee: All applicants must pay a non-refundable $50 application fee to cover processing expenses. Mail dollar checks to:

Application and Program Timeline:

  • All applications MUST be received by 5pm (Pacific Standard Time), March 1, 2019. Skype interview of shortlisted candidates will occur before the end of March.

  • Program dates are: August 21, 2019 through December 12, 2019 (subject to slight changes). 

Program Costs:

The program fee is $7,900 (which includes tuition, housing, local transportation, and program excursions). There unfortunately is no financial aid available to non-US citizens. Non-citizens will also need to cover the following additional expenses:

o Plane ticket to and from Pakistan
o Pakistan visa fee
o Travel & emergency evacuation insurance coverage for the duration of the program
o Cost of food and incidentals for the duration of the program roughly ($500 per month)
