The STARTALK Hindi Program at Penn was a three-week program for high school students. The umbrella theme of the program, “celebrations” and “festivities,” covered six sub-themes: Republic Day, Rakhi, Holi, Deewali, country fair, and wedding. There were 13 nonheritage and 6 heritage participants in the program. They were exposed to basic language skills in the context of Indian culture in India. The program provided real-life experience with Hindi and Hindi language speaking communities face-to-face on campus and internationally through Skype videoconferencing. The participants learned to introduce themselves and others; ask and answer simple questions; and exchange information about families, food, homes, shopping, hobbies, festivals, music, weddings, and yoga.
