Bharatanatyam: Performance, History, Memory (Part 1)

This two-day residency explores the vernacular histories of courtesan dance in South India through both lecture and live performances. Hari Krishnan, Associate Professor of Dance at Wesleyan University, Artistic Director of the Toronto-based dance company inDance, and master performer of Bharatanatyam, will be joined by musicians Vaaraki Wijayaraj, Kajan Pararasasegaram and Bala Krishnaraj. They will be presenting rare dances and music repertoire from the courtesan communities of central Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Commentary will be by Dr. Davesh Soneji, Associate Professor of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and historian of the performing arts of South India. 

"Bharatanatyam: Performance, History, Memory," takes place over the course of two days.
Part one: Wednesday, October 11, 2017 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Part two: Thursday, October 12, 2017 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm
