Kathleen D. Morrison, Ph.D., is a Curator in the Asian Section and the Sally and Alvin V. Shoemaker Professor of Anthropology. She is also chair of the Anthropology Department and co-Director of Penn’s new university-wide Environmental Innovations Initiative.

Dr. Morrison has spent the last three decades studying the changing history of farming, food, and human impact on the natural environment in southern India. Using methods such as regional survey, excavation, and the analysis of ancient plant remains, especially pollen grains, she explores how choices about consumption and power relations lead to environmental change.

In southern India, one big transition that changed diets, cuisines, and landscapes was the expansion of rice farming, a history she and members of the Penn Paleoecology Lab are studying. Recently, she’s been working with colleagues around the world to bring together archaeological data to better assess human environment impact on a global scale.

Unfortunately, Facebook does not allow the public to watch live-stream videos if the user does not have a Facebook account. However, we will be sharing recordings of these live-stream videos through Penn Museum At Home. The newest Living Room Lecture video will be uploaded within a few days of the live-stream.
