Dr. Partha Chatterjee, a leading scholar in history, anthropology, and political science, joins the Workshop in the Global Nineteenth Century for the first session of the 2014-15 year.  Dr. Chatterjee will be presenting his paper, "Liberalism in the Eastern Colony," on Wednesday, September 24 at 5pm in the main lecture room (Class of Â78 Room) on the sixth floor of Van Pelt Library.  All are invited to attend the workshop and the reception after.  Professor Chatterjee's pre-circulated paper is available to read here: http://sites.sas.upenn.edu/global-19th-century/event/workshop-global-19th-century-dr-partha-chatterjee.
Dr. Chatterjee received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester and divides his time between Columbia University and the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta.  He has played a formative role in the schools of subaltern studies and postcolonialism, and  has authored more than twenty books, including The Politics of the Governed: Considerations on Political Society in Most of the World (2004) and The Nation and Its Fragments: Colonial and Postcolonial Histories (1993).
