Jaipur: Public Health and Health Management


Jaipur, the capital of the North Indian State of Rajasthan, is known for its architectural beauty and rich cultural arts. Located 162 miles from India’s capital New Delhi, Jaipur forms a part of the Golden Triangle  along with Agra. Students staying in Jaipur will have easy access to other popular Rajasthani destinations such as Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Mount Abu. 

Host Institution: Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR)  IIHMR University is a specialized research university in health management research, postgraduate education and training exclusively in the health sector. The University aims to generate new knowledge and technologies to provide evidence and inputs for developing effective health policies, interventions and strategies. Over the last 30 years, IIHMR, working as a WHO Collaborating Centre for District Health Systems, has played a major role in promoting and conducting health policy and program management research in India. The institute also works collaboratively with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Through IIHMR students can conduct research on any number of topics related to public health in India. Research topics can include but are not limited to: cultural factors shaping health; the growing impact of non-communicable diseases; malnutrition; health and technology; maternal and children’s health; topics related to identity and health (gender, caste, class etc.), etc. Students can develop a research project and/or help to further projects already in progress.

Mentor: Dr. Vivek Bhandari is the President of IIHMR and a Penn alum. Before he moved to IIHMR, Dr. Bhandari was a tenured faculty member in the School of Social Science at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He later returned to India as director of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), a position he held until 2011. From 2011 to 2015, Prof. Bhandari served as a consultant to a variety of philanthropic trusts and foundations such as the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and the Reliance Foundation. Working as an independent researcher, he worked closely with a number of grassroots organizations publishing work on issues of rural development, livelihoods, political reform, and gender equality.

Program Dates: Between June 1 - August 11

Program Length: 8 Weeks

Housing: Students will stay at an on-campus guest house (IIHMR will coordinate)

Internships Available: for 4 students
