The Univ ersity of Pennsy lv ania's Africa Center, Center for East Asian Studies, Middle East Center, and South Asia Center offered the annual Summer Institute for Educators July 22-26th at Penn's Carriage House/LGBT Center.
This year's theme, "No Longer the Other: Integrating Gender into a Global Curriculum," increased understanding of gender as an analy tic category and a pedagogical tool for the K-16 classroom. The Institute focused on human rights, access to education and labor markets, popular culture, art and film. 18 K-16 educators from 4 states participated.
Teachers heard presentations from Penn faculty and doctoral students, including: Raili Roy , Anany a Dasgupta, Ramy a Sreeniv asan, Manjita Mukharji, Pushkar Sohoni, and Sebastian Cherng. Other faculty from Penn State (Paula Smith), West Chester Univ ersity (Rebecca Shubar) and Drexel University (Joel Oestreich) also presented. Workshops were led by representativ es from American Friends Service Committee, Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition and Fairfax County Public Schools.
Presenters and teachers alike explored the multiple globalized intersections between gender, race, class and sexuality in daily discussions and a blog. Teachers dev eloped their own lesson plans based on the knowledge gained in the Institute and presented them to the group on the final day.
