Nicole Brigstock named as 2018 Pulitzer Center International Student Fellow

The South Asia Center and Pulitzer Center's Summer Reporting Fellowship program provides Penn students with the opportunity and resources necessary to become a student journalist and dive into global issues. With the mentorship and support of Pulitzer Center editors, students learn methods of reporting, photography and travel logistics. Over the course of the summer, participants will produce multiple journalistic media pieces including blog posts, videos, articles and slideshows. Through experiential learning students master the art of creating and sharing a story. This month the South Asia Center and Pulitzer center nominated
Nicole Brigstock as the 2018 Student Fellow.

Nicole Brigstock is a rising junior at Penn from Columbus, Ohio. She is majoring in Political Science with a certificate in Global Human Rights and a minor in Law and Society. Before coming to Penn, Nicole took a gap year to do volunteer work in the Philippines, South Africa, Nepal, Ecuador, and Perú. Her main passion is advocating for human rights, and her efforts have focused on promoting refugee rights, prisoner rights, and anti-trafficking movements.

This summer Nicole will go back to Nepal as a South Asia Center research intern and a Pulitzer Center student fellow. She will be volunteering with SASANE, a Kathmandu-based NGO run by human trafficking survivors. SASANE promotes human trafficking education within local communities and works to empower trafficking survivors through legal services and work training. Nicole will be assisting SASANE’s English teaching programs, helping to apply for grant funding, and producing videos to promote the organization. She will also be collaborating with other anti-trafficking organizations and movements over the summer. Nicole will write an article for the Pulitzer Center about trafficking issues in Nepal and survivors’ efforts to combat trafficking, empower women and provide support to fellow survivors.
