Conference: Transitions in Indian Music and Dance in the Colonial Indian Ocean, c.1750-1950

Apr 25, 2014 - Apr 26, 2014 at - | Irvine Auditorium and Houston Hall

“Musical Transitions to European Colonialism in the Eastern Indian Ocean” is a project sponsored by the European Research Council and led by Katherine Butler Schofield at King’s College London. The project’s aim is to probe in depth the environments of music and dance before and after colonialism took hold, and to use previously unused sources and fresh thinking to trace changes over a longer time frame than is usually considered.

This conference brings together members of the Musical Transitions team working on North India and the Straits Settlements, c. 1750-1950, into discussion with five eminent interlocutors who represent a range of disciplinary standpoints: history, ethnomusicology, literature, performance, and religious studies.
