Speaker Bureau and Materials

Penn’s faculty, graduate students and South Asia experts from the community form the South Asia Center’s Speakers Bureau. These speakers have an expertise in a wide variety of subjects; recent classroom visit topics include 'Introduction to South Asia', 'Language and Literacy in Afghanistan', among others. Speakers can be invited to make their presentations to your classes on topics suggested by you. To request a classroom visit please contact our outreach coordinator, Sharifa Halimi. Books, Films and Artifacts

Besides the South Asia collection at the Van Pelt Library, the South Asia Center also has books and artifacts that highlight the cultural aspects of the region, such as music, dress, games and the like. These can be borrowed from our Center for classroom use.

Affiliated Faculty Program

The South Asia Center invites non-Penn faculty members from the Philadelphia region whose research and teaching interest include South Asia to share in, and to contribute to, the knowledge and programs offered by the University's South Asia studies community by becoming an Affiliated Faculty Member of the South Asia Center at Penn. The Center hopes to build upon our mutual interests and expertise in innovative and exciting ways, and we hope that you will join us in expanding our range of intellectual and cultural offerings. We look forward to your contributions to our existing activities, as well as to your suggestions for further programming and pedagogic initiatives.

As an Affiliated Faculty Member, we will keep you informed about new developments in current research, publications, teaching and cultural and public affairs programs via the South Asia Newsletter and our SAC Events listserv. You will also receive invitations to major events and activities; an updated list of South Asia studies faculty and scholars in the Philadelphia metropolitan area; and periodic calendars of activities. We offer Affiliated Faculty Members the opportunity to use the University's outstanding South Asia Library collection, as well as its museum, which holds an extensive South Asia collection. We also collaborate closely with the Indian & Himalayan section of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Affiliated Faculty Fund provides small grants of up to $1000 to support faculty and/or student-led activities relating to South Asia on member campuses.  These grants are designed to build interest in South Asia programming in colleges and universities in the greater Delaware region.  Proposals that involve participants from more than one area institution are particularly encouraged.  Grants might help to bring a speaker or South Asian film to your campus(s), pay for a venue or advertising for a South Asian writing group or South Asia-related works-in-progress seminar, or otherwise support South Asia-related events or collaboration.  Unfortunately, food/beverage expenses are not allowed, per US Department of Education rules for Title VI grant funds.
